Tom Andrews, Ph.D.

Tom Andrews, Ph.D. Tom Andrews, Ph.D. (Clinical Psychology) counsels adults for emotional, behavioral, and relationship problems. While a person’s personality and history are largely fixed, he or she can add to themselves new ways of dealing with problems. These ways are usually simple (though not necessarily easy). Some are already known and used in other parts of the person’s life; others are drawn from clinical practice and research. Successful use of the suggested techniques depends upon the person’s understanding and regularly practicing them. Dr. Andrews’ role in this work is to be a supportive coach.

Dr. Andrews has extensive experience in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and attention-management approaches to excessive worry, stress, anxiety, and fear, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, and Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia. He uses similar strategies and tactics in working with other excessive, disruptive emotions, such as depression and anger (limited to there being no danger to self or others). CBT and attention-management are compatible with and may be used instead of psychiatric medications.

In working with individuals and couples with relationship problems, Dr. Andrews coaches toward their recognizing and avoiding destructive patterns of interacting and their practicing more effective patterns. The long-term goal is a mutually satisfying relationship in which each person deeply appreciates their being together in life as friends, lovers, and partners. They work at reducing and recovering quickly from the inevitable negative moments and at making and maintaining positive moments. They are attentive and responsive to one another. This relationship work importantly includes managing one’s own negative emotions, language, and behavior, whether provoked by the other person or from within oneself. Dr. Andrews also works with adults transitioning from divorce.
